We welcomed a visitor from Alive Leisure to our group on 30th October to support the English Athletics Athletics #RunandTalk campaign week and This Girl Can‘s Let’s Lift the Curfew campaign.

This Girl Can‘s Let’s Lift the Curfew campaign aims to showcase women’s stories and concerns around getting active outdoors in the darker months. Supported by Sport England, it calls on wider society to acknowledge their role in making getting active outdoors safer for women.

Rebecca took a couple of pictures and spoke to us about our sessions and reasons for running in an all ladies running group allow us to socialise and feel safe whilst running, jeffing or walking at night to highlight the need for the campaigns.

Responses from our wonderful ladies were:

  • “I’m welcome to attend these sessions no matter my speed, as I know I’ll never be left behind”
  • “I get the chance to exercise and talk, offloading my day’s activities or week onto others who are very happy to listen!”
  • “This group allows me to go on routes around the town that I’d often avoid, but thanks to the Ladybirds I feel safe”

Help us in the This Girl Can and Sport England bid to lobby change to lift the curfew!

If you are worried then  RunTogether have produced a guide to running in the dark for individual runners and leaders to consider ways to keep safe when exercising at night; https://runtogether.co.uk/.../tips-and-advice/night-running/ and

GoodGym have put together a training guide on male allyship to help improve women’s safety at night, which may be helpful to share with male runners https://www.goodgym.org/stories/women-night-safety
